Description

The Saint Anne Lake is one of the Szecklerland’s major natural attractions because it’s the only volcanic crater lake from Romania and East-Central Europe.
Having an oval form, the Saint Anne Lake has a length of 620 m, a width of 460 m and a maximum depth of 7 m, being located at an elevation of 950 meters. Its age can’t be exactly determined but the most researchers established that last volcanic eruption took place somewhere around 32.000 and 9.800 years ago.
Due to lack of springs, the lake is supplied exclusively from precipitations. Another interesting fact is the lack of oxygen which cause the inability to develop life forms. The water is also so pure that it almost has the purity of distilled water.
Being the only one of its kind, the Saint Anne Lake’s history is filled with legends and myths. One of the legends explains the name of the lake and it begins with one young couple that they should get married. The girl, Anne, was forced by her parents to marry because they only wanted the boy’s fortune. Anne didn’t agreed with the marriage idea so, on the wedding night, the young bride threw herself into the lake’s waters. Her corpse was never found. Near the lake there is a Roman-Catholic chapel dedicated to Saint Anne.
Annually, thousands of tourists come to Saint Anne Lake for its wonderful landscapes. They are also attracted by Ciomatu Mountain which has 17 km of hiking trails for those who love walking in middle of nature. July 24 is The Day of Saint Anne Lake Festival which is financed with European funds. It’s an event which promotes local traditions by organizing cooking contests, traditional dance competitions and boat races.
