Over 6 km long, the Bicaz Gorges represent an authentic picturesque area of Romania, in the central part of the Hășmaș Mountains. The gorges are park of the Bicaz Gorges – Hășmaș Natural Park.
The most interesting part about these outstanding gorges is that they are a popular passage between two large regions of Romania, namely between Transylvania in north-central- west and Moldavia in north-east. Yes, this road is pretty traveled and it is an important link between these two different areas of the country.
The road through the Bicaz Gorges travels by the Red Lake, a natural dam that has formed after a mountain slope crushed down, back in 1838 after a powerful earthquake shook the entire area. The gorges, we know as Bicaz Gorges, were forged into the rock mountains by the beautiful Bicaz River, that springs from this breathtaking yet spooky-looking lake, that is a must-see.
What to expect from the Bicaz Gorges? Tight cornering and natural rock tunnels that give you the sensation that the mountain is reachable at an arm’s length. You will see parts where the road is carved into the mountain so tall vehicles like busses can pass through.
The overall feeling that you have is that you’re so small and insignificant compared to the majesty of nature. Clean mountain air, breathtaking landscape, souvenir stands, local food and hospitality will make your travel even more pleasant and unique.
Other things to see or do here? First off, the Red Lake is a famous mountain climate resort worth visiting, where you can find accommodation as well.
There are also a lot of belvedere points or operation points, such as the Sughardu Mic Mountain, that offers a marvelous view over the lake and the mountain peaks that surround it.
The Ghilcoș Massif is also a great obervation point.

First off, the Licaș Abyss, a natural calcare dolomitice speological reservation.
If you stray from the main road and head for the Bicaz-Chei commune, you’ll reach the Șugăului Gorges, a beautiful site with diverse carstic phenomena, steep peaks, gorges and very many caves. The Duruitoare and Bicăjelului Gorges formed at the Trei Fântâni influx into the Bicaz river.
If you want to go up into the mountains, you will find great trail towards the mountain peaks starting from the the Poiana Albă – Hășmașul Mare. Make sure you’re all set for a Carpathian adventure!
