With a total of 3446 km², the Danube Delta is the 2 nd largest delta in Europe, but also the best preserved of all the deltas in Europe.
Danube Delta has made it to the UNESCO world heritage list in 1991, as a biosphere reservation and it includes 23 natural reservations and sites, amongst which The Histria Citadel, The Letea Forest, The Ghiunghiurmez Hill, The Wolves Sandbank as well as many lakes, forests, ornithological reservations and unique landscapes specific to this area.
One of the largest wetlands of Europe, the Danube Delta is famous for its untamed beauty and wilderness, as well as for the hospitable people as a great getaway. Its first historical mentioning was left by the Greek historian Herodotus, who describes the entry of the Darius’ Persian fleet into the delta, after his campaign at Histria (515-513 B.C.).
The Danube Delta is almost entirely on the territory of Romania and it comprises of hundreds of lakes and estuaries, in between its 3 large arms that flow directly into the waters of The Black Sea. Due to the 67 millions of tons of river deposits gathered every year by the Danube, the delta is expanding with approximately 40 m² every year.

In fact, the delta comprises of more than 1200 species of trees and plants, and the richest bird variety in Europe, with over 300 different species, including unique pelican colonies.
Tulcea County is a unique end of the world, paradoxically the youngest earth of Europe, close to the oldest mountains on Earth, the hercynian Măcin Mountain, over 400.000.000 years old.
