Sinaia Royal Domain includes, besides Peles Castle, The Knights Mansion, The Economat, The Guards Villa, The Architects Mansion, The House of Garden, The House of Hunting called ‘Foisorul’ and the Pelisor Castle.
The last one was built between 1899-1902 for the successors of the royal couple Elizabeth and Carol I, prince Ferdinand and princess Maria, to be used as their residence. It is a small-scale version of Peles Castle with only 99 rooms.
Pelisor is the only castle from Romania executed in Art-Nouveau style. The exterior architecture combines ‘Fachwerk’ and traditional Romanian elements after king’s wishes. The last ones are found in those two towers of the castle which are covered with colored sandstone tiles and which suggests the steeples from the Bucovina’s churches.
For the tourists, the most attractive aspect of the castle is the interior which was designed in conformity with the drawings of queen Maria in ‘1900 Art’ style. They say it was her way to express herself, to set free her nonconformist and modern spirit. During her life, she decorated many times the most important rooms of the castle according to her evolution and designer preferences.
The most impressive and beautiful rooms are: The Golden Room which is completely covered with linden gilded wood and has the personal elements of Queen Maria, the thistle leaves and the Celtic Cross; The Golden Bedroom is decorated with elements of Celtic and Byzantine origin; The Honor Hall decorations are inspired by the central hall of Cliveden House Castle from England and it remains in memory by the Queen Maria portrait painted in 1924.
After 1948, Pelisor was taken by Romanian state and became House of Creation used by Romanian writers, composers and painters. Since 1993, Pelisor is opened for visitors who are increasingly more every year.
