Description

When King Charles I saw for the first time Sinaia village in 1866, he fell in love for the picturesque Carpathian landscape. In those days, Sinaia village had a strategic position because the Romanian border with Austro-Hungarian Empire was 35 km North in Predeal and after the unification of Transylvania with the old kingdom, Sinaia location was right in the middle of the country.
King Charles decided to build there a castle to be used as summer residence for his royal family. He hired three important architects and two skilled decorators who designed the castle in neo-renascentiste style. The construction began in 1973 and it was finished 41 years later, in 1914, the year of the King Charles’ death. The castle has 160 chambers, one theater room (decorated in Louis IV style) and modern facilities: it is the first electrified European castle and since 1883 it has its own central heating.
The most important halls of the Peles Castle are:
• The Honor Hall whose glass ceiling can be removed through an electric system and the sky full of stars can be admired in the warm summer nights;
• The Royal Library has a rare book collection with leather covers and letters engraved in gold. Behind the shelves, there is a secret door which leads through the castle;
• In The Grand Armory there are 4000 European and Oriental exhibits of weapons and armor which are from the 14th – 17th centuries;
• The Florentine Room is impressive through the Renaissance elements, the solid bronze doors executed in Rome and the Grand Marble Fireplace designed with Michelangelo motifs;
• The Moorish Salon is the room where Hispanic and North-African elements are combined together and in the center of it there is an indoor marble fountain;
• The Turkish Parlor is full of hand-made persian rugs, coperwares and silk brocades from Izmir, Anatolia, Isparta, Smirna, Mosul and Bukhara.
In 1948, Peles Castle was confiscated by Comunist Party and it becames museum since 1953. Today, it belongs to Royal Family who agreed that the castle to be part of Romania’s tourism circuit.
After Bran Castle, Peles is the most visited castle in Romania, chosen by visitors for its historical value, accumulated riches and breathtaking surroundings.
