Located in the Țicău neighbour of Iași municipality, the old house of Romanian writer “Ion Creangă”, also known as bojdeuca “Ion Creangă” (bojdeuca – regional term for small and shabby peasant house) is one of the most famous tourist destinations in the city of Iași, the heart of Moldavia region of Romania.
Visiting the “Ion Creangă” memorial museum is like going back in time, in the year 1872, to be more precise, the year when 35-year-old Creangă moved from his home village of Humulești to the big city of Iași.
Known for its masterpieces of local humor and regional language of folkloric inspiration as well personal tales of authentic literary realism inspired by rural life, Ion Creangă is one of the most appreciated Romanian fairytale writer and raconteur.
It was in this small and humble home where famous writer Creangă wrote most of his novellas, and most importantly this is where he wrote down his most famous short story, the “Childhood Memories” volume, much appreciated by adults and kids altogether.
Although small and barren, this house had very important guests over the years, amongst which Mihai Eminescu, Romania’s national poet, a genius beyond hid time, who spent the summer and autumn of 1876 as a tenant here. In 1918, April 15 th , bojdeuca becomes the first literal memorial museum in the country.
Once you step foot inside the small hovel, the feeling that you get is that the house is still inhabited, with all things in order, as if it still awaits for writer Ion Creangă to come back. In the kitchen area there is the clay chimney, the three legged table, the stove and the religious icon on the wall as well as other original objects that re-create the exact feeling of Ion Creangă’s life at the end of 19 th century, which is pretty awesome.
There’s lots of events that take place year around at the “Ion Creangă” memorial museum, amongst which the Kids’ Literature Festival “Ion Creangă”, The National Literary Creation Competition and many other more fun events for kids, but not only.
Last year, the museum opened its own mini-library with books for kids called „Librăria de la Bojdeucă”.
Today, Bojdeuca “Ion Creangă” or the “Ion Creangă” Memorial House is the most visited museum in Iași, comprises of a extensive collection of old and original documents that continue to remind us of the life and works of a very important Romanian artist, as well as the life and era of those distant times.
